How to Purge Your Closet: Part Two – 5 Ideas for Organizing a Small Closet
In my heart, I live in a house with a closet like Carrie Bradshaw’s. However; in reality, I share one closet the size of a small refrigerator with my husband. Real estate is SLIM and in order to maximize space, organization is key. These ideas for organizing a small closet helped to create order and a peaceful place to start the day. After decluttering, of course.
Use the Door
This solution isn’t sexy, but shoes are bulky and take up lots of space. Using the back of the door for shoes gets them up off the floor and maximizes those precious square feet. This solution is especially helpful if there are few (or no!) shelves in the closet.
Go With Clear Plastic Containers
Using a clear acrylic or plastic storage box will not only allow you to *see* your clothing, it will add a modern and minimal touch. These boxes are great for things like boots, sweaters, jackets or scarves. BONUS: These containers stack really well. They could go on the floor in place of a bureau if space is really tight.
Use the Same Hangers
Using matching hangers definitely stems from an aesthetic choice on my end. BUT, these velvet hangers have a much thinner profile than my old plastic ones. Because they’re thinner, I can fit more onto a rack!
Speaking of hangers! These four tiered hangers make it easy to hang several pairs of pants on one hanger. I use these for all of my jeans and may even use one to hang my workout leggings.
Make Your Own “Drawers”
Thankfully, our closet has two built in shelves to work with. In order to keep garments tidy on the shelves, I used plastic containers to divide up and store my bulkier items – sort of like drawers, these divisions keep things organized and in their place. I also used this space to house some shorter boots I couldn’t fit on the rack behind the door and heavy sweaters that keep their shape when folded.
Maximize Wall Space
Unlike the back of the door, this option is pretty cute. Use the wall to hang items like scarves, bags or hats. Hanging these items up on the wall not only helps them keep their shape, but makes, perhaps infrequently worn, items top of mind and easy to grab.
If you’ve tried all of these ideas for organizing a small closet and still struggle fit everything, don’t be afraid to use the space under the bed. This under the bed storage bag is my FAVORITE. I use it to store all of my off season items.
