How a Clothing Rack Keeps My Minimalist Wardrobe Organized

Minimalist Clothing Rack

I’m a gal who loves turning chaos into calm. And when it comes to my closet – the chaos could easily take over if  I’m not careful. Enter – clothing racks (or garment racks if we’re feeling fancy).

These organizational workhorses are a godsend for those of us blessed with small closets and even more so for those of us who have to share those small closets with partners.

What I love about a garment rack is that they can serve many different purposes – purely decorative, purely functional, or a mix of both.

Mine serves as an aesthetically pleasing way to lay out my outfits for the week and to help me romanticize the ritual of getting dressed each day.

As you probably know, I’m on a journey to uncover my personal style and figure out how I want to show up in the world.

Organizing my clothes on a clothing rack allows me to see, at all times, the things I love wearing and serves as a visual reminder that I have plenty of clothes to work with.

Here are three big takeaways I’ve learned from using a garment rack regularly.

Maximizes Closet Storage Space

Blessed are some folks with walk-in closets, bathrooms big enough for two people to be in there at the same time, and garbage cans discretely tucked away into kitchen cabinets. (Yay them!)

But for those of us working with slightly less real estate (small space queens!) and whose closets are meant for a family of one – listen up!

Garment racks will change your life.

What I like to do is pull from my closet the outfits I want to wear for the week.

This helps me get excited for the week ahead and feel more on top of my schedule.  It also encourages me to build outfits thoughtfully.

Garment racks can showcase favorite items which can:

  • help drum up excitement around getting dressed
  • remind you to wear them!

If your needs are purely functional, garment racks maximize closet storage space by clearing out items that feel bulky and cluttered.

For example, if you have a lot of long dresses, puffy coats, or tons of trousers and jeans – use the clothing rack to hang up those space hogs.

Choose a garment rack that has a simple design so that it doesn’t overwhelm a space and do your best to match it to your aesthetic.

Garment racks also add more storage for spaces like a guest room. They invite your guests to hang up their things, tuck away the suitcase, and stay for a bit.

I’d stick to neutral colors and simple materials to keep things easy.

Easily Organizes Capsule Wardrobe Outfits

I mentioned above that I like to pull my outfits for the week ahead and hang them on my clothing rack.

When curating a capsule wardrobe, outfit planning helps to do two things:

  • ensure all items look good together
  • allows weekly check-ins with yourself about your style

Capsule wardrobes don’t need to consist of a set number of items or a specific color scheme.

However, they should reflect the person wearing them

A garment rack is a great idea for organizing outfits that match what you’re feeling for the week.

They also allow you to check in and to see if they still align with you and your style goals.

Using a garment rack this way helps create a more thoughtful and mindful process of getting dressed.

Romanticizes the Ritual of Getting Dressed

Something I’ve been missing from my daily routine is a little bit of romance.

I mean the kind of romance where I make even the smallest of tasks more beautiful, pleasurable, or deeply satisfying.

I’m on a mission to create a ritual around dressing for the day.

There’s something so simply satisfying about choosing a piece off of an aesthetic clothing rack.

Garment racks mean no more digging through closets in the dark.

Not to be dramatic, but dressing this way is self-care. Using a garment rack thoughtfully mitigates the stress of dressing and creates a home for beloved pieces.

Clothing racks elevate an everyday task into something charming. Something to look forward to.
